What If I "HAVE" To Do Multitasking?
We’ve been told that Multitasking is real, that we can do multiple things at once.
Without us even knowing, it wastes a ton of time and energy.
It makes us do a lot of stuff, without any result. It’s stressful.
In the next 5 minutes, you’ll understand why “our idea” of multitasking fails miserably, and how to ACTUALLY do 500 things at once, and be extremely productive.
More below
Multitasking IS NOT “Multiple” Tasks At Once
It is impossible to do REAL work while you’re doing something else.
Let’s say you’re sitting down to work, and you’re also watching a series, and you’re also chatting with your coworker, whilst drinking coffee.
Your mind has to keep running between work, watching the series, talking AND drinking coffee.
You don’t do ANYTHING fully. You neither work, nor enjoy the show, nor enjoy the chat nor the coffee.
Guess what? You’re now stressed and you need to rush to meet deadlines.
You may now have this question.
What If I HAVE To Do Multiple REAL Tasks?
We get this a lot.
Our users find themselves in situations that sound like absolute chaos.
We’re talking about 15 big projects AT ONCE with tight deadlines.
But, they get it done EASILY
Here’s the trick. They work 15 tasks, ONE AT A TIME.
They prioritise and do the hardest stuff when they’re the strongest. If you want to see how you could join the ranks,
Now there’s more.
So what do you do, when you HAVE to multitask?
Let’s say you “have” to do a thousand things at once.
Maybe it’s deployment day. Maybe you need to launch a website. Could be anything.
Here’s the right way to do it.
This is how our users achieve success.
How they reduce stress. How they improve their productivity, even with multitasking.
Keep reading and we’ll tell you how.
Task-Switching Mastery
Our brains have this beautiful area called the prefrontal cortex.
One of its functions is to direct our attention and our energy depending upon context.
Remember school?
We had maths, science, social science, languages and if the stars, the universe and God himself agreed, sports.
We had to jump between ALL these, without any break. And all this is done by the prefrontal cortex.
As adults, we go through a thousand times more stress and demand tasks, and so we must develop a “system” that allows us to manage multiple tasks.
Here are 3 tools that you can use to build your multitasking system.
Smooth Transition Between Tasks
Remember when we said our brains direct attention depending upon the context?
For example, let’s say you’re doing a task that involves a lot of analytical work, and then you have to jump to a task that needs creative problem solving.
People commonly make the mistake of jumping right away.
It’s like taking your scooter to the ocean.
The analytical part of your brain is not geared for creative problem solving.
When you abruptly switch, it FRIES your neural circuits. It leads to stress, cognitive overload and therefore inefficiency and ruins health.
You have to cool down the previous part, and warm up the next part of your brain.
The easiest way to do this is by doing NOTHING for a couple of minutes.
Just sit, and stare into the void, or go for a walk.
And then you get to the next task, but don’t begin deep work right away.
Start slow, take it easy and you’ll automatically get into what we call the “flow state” of work, where you get MASSIVE action done.
Here’s how to get into that state.
Quick Eye Exercises
If you haven’t found it out already, our eyes are just extensions of our brain.
Our eyes literally are the part of the brain that sticks out.
Which means, using your eyes, you can DIRECTLY train your brain to do certain things.
One of them is task switching.
Once you sit down to work, perform these eye exercises
Close Your Eyes: Focus on your bodily sensations for 5-15 seconds.
Focus on Your Hand: Open your eyes and look at your hand for 5-15 seconds.
Look at an Intermediate Distance: Focus on something 10-20 feet away for 5-15 seconds.
Look at the Horizon: Find a point as far away as possible and focus for 5-15 seconds.
Return to Immediate Environment: Close your eyes again and focus on your breathing.
Remove Load From Your Brain
Most of the stress and inefficiencies due to multitasking, don’t actually come from “doing multiple tasks”
It comes from trying to remember and juggle hundreds of things “inside” your brain.
In this state of stress, every time you try to work, you suddenly remember another important task you need to tackle.
This is why, no matter how many tasks you have. You WRITE THEM DOWN.
And the best place to do this, is to use a simple project management tool like Astravue.
This allows you to know what tasks you have to, and when you have to finish them, so you can plan your time out, take enough breaks,
and make sure you GET IT DONE, without deep-frying your brain.
You can simply go to Astravue, create a list of all your 5000 tasks (including binge-watching shows)
And then, you simply apply the productivity tools we spoke about here for each task.
And now, you have a fully functioning multitasking SYSTEM. Something you can rely on.
Something you can wake up to and not waste zero time and energy, and massively improve productivity.
Just click on the button below, make your list and GET TO WORK.
